of what? what's she going do? gather up an army of lotr/hp slash fanciers, capture bush, stage a coup d'etat and put up orlando bloom as supreme leader and religious icon for the united states of middle-earth? secret service wastes gas money driving around south carolina in pursuit of livejournal threats from some kid, while dubya's regime cuts funding for airport security. it's a bit stupid in my opinion. that's not follow up--that's harassment.
Actually, that's the point: (if this is all even true) we don't know what the person who reported it said, and the Secret Service doesn't know what this girl is like. That's one thing about the internet -- you can really say whatever you want. IE: I could say I'm a 45 year old man with a gun in my lap, and people (who didn't know me) wouldn't know I wasn't lying. Though, yeah, it's pretty stupid and there must be worse threats out there, even on livejournal. And, in my opinion, the Secret Service probably screwed up big time by going to her house and allowing her to post about it. Because I've got the strangest feeling that now there's going to be a lot of angry posts on LJ about Bush/Big Brother/what have you.
I hope at least some of that made sense. (I ramble too often.)
It's funny that we never really expected it, too, considering how public it is, that it's on the internet, and that, you know, the government is paranoid. As the esteemed Jack Sparrow once said, "funny ol' world, isn't it?"
Oh I know. It's like, *cruising LJ, having a good time (or boring, whichever)* then... *WAPOW! Big Brother paranoia!! HE is out to get you!!!!*
It's pretty funny, when you take a big step back and look at it. But it certainly makes me glad that I don't talk about politics, that's for damn sure.
Definitely came out of left field, that's for sure. And I do feel very sheepish about posting this, but it IS kind of interesting, too.
True, it is.... And I'm glad that when I DO talk about politics on LJ, that I friends-lock the entry. And I don't do it all that often, either, so that helps, too.
Yeah it is interesting. If not highly amusing. (Though I think the fact that you and I have two different threads in the same entry is pretty funny too.)
I just... don't talk about it. Or I say it plain like, "I don't like so-and-so" and "I voted for Kerry". That, surely, can't get me into trouble. And if it can, I'm sad.
::snerk:: That it is. Both actually, the whole thing, AND our having two different threads in one entry. Didn't so much think that that whole thing was funny when I first read it, but it really is.
If that can get you into trouble, then we're a lot worse off than I thought. And I try SO much not to talk about it (because it's a bad, bad thing)... but sometimes I'm just so peeved that it slips out.
However. I have criticized the president in all ways, from crude to intelligent to downright threatening, in my own LJ, and I will continue to do so. Let them knock on my door! I'll answer it the same way I make my threats--unarmed, cheerful, and in no mind to back down.
